Di seguito riportiamo la bellissima intervista rilasciata qualche giorno fa da Mario Mandžukić al quotidiano croato Sportske Novosti. L’intervista è la traduzione dalla versione in inglese, che riportiamo successivamente a quella in italiano.

SN: Il 21 Maggio giocherai la finale di Coppa Italia contro il Milan. Per Mario Mandžukič è una grossa opportunità di vincere il diciottesimo trofeo della sua carriera.
MM: È una partita secca in cui tutti hanno possibilità. Il Milan è una grande squadra e sono certo che dovremo lottare per il terzo trofeo stagionale.
SN: Mi sembri molto rilassato. Quali sono le tue sensazioni dopo aver vinto lo Scudetto?
MM: Mi sento alla grande. Ma c’è ancora tempo per festeggiare. La stagione non è finita, dobbiamo restare concentrati ed essere professionali.
SN: A livello di organizzazione la Juventus è un top club?
MM: Senza dubbio. Sapevo che fosse un grande club, con una lunga tradizione, ma finché non ne fai parte non ti rendi conto di quanto sia bene organizzato. Sono stato in grandi squadre europee ma quando sono arrivato alla Juventus sono rimasto impressionato.
SN: Ti sei rotto il naso per la seconda volta in un anno. Fa ancora male?
MM: Sto bene, non fa più male. Ho tolto la maschera dopo una partita, mi infastidiva…
SN: I dottori come hanno reagito dopo che l’hai fatto?
MM: I medici sono sempre molto scrupolosi ma non li ascolto sempre. Se sto bene e mi sento di giocare non ho bisogno di stare a riposo. Ho avuto molti problemi quest’anno. Mai così tanti. Forse è per questo se ho iniziato a dare più ascolto ai medici.
SN: E nonostante tutto sei un fenomeno. Non hai avuto infortuni seri. Come te lo spieghi?
MM: Credo sia dovuto alla genetica e anche al mio stile di vita tranquillo. Durante la stagione i miei ritmi sono “casa-allenamento-stadio-casa”.
SN: Quindi passi il tempo libero in casa, cosa fai in genere?
MM: Amo la pace e la tranquillità della mia casa. Io e la mia ragazza Ivana passiamo il tempo con il nostro cane Leni. Mi piace riposare bene, quindi il giorno dopo la partita lo passo sdraiato a riposarmi. Per me è il modo migliore di recuperare le energie, dato che non mi piacciono i massaggi.
SN: Non giocherai contro il Verona e dopo l’ultima partita di campionato ti aspetta la finale di Coppa Italia…
MM: Non giocherò contro il Verona a causa della squalifica. È la prima volta in questa stagione in cui vengo squalificato a causa di troppi cartellini gialli. E alcuni dicono che sono un cattivo… (ride). La partita contro il Milan sarà nel giorno del mio trentesimo compleanno, quindi mi aspetto tanti commenti come “oh, è così vecchio”, “è un giocatore finito” ecc. (ride)
SN: Non ti ho mai visto ridere così! Sei proprio di buon umore.
MM: Sto davvero alla grande. Dopo aver avuto tanti infortuni l’anno scorso ora sto davvero bene. Sono felice.
SN: Ma lo scorso autunno non stavi così…
MM: La stagione era iniziata malissimo, per la Juve e per me, ed è finita alla grande. La cosa più importante è che i nostri tifosi siano felici. L’inizio è stato davvero scoraggiante. Ma forse doveva andare così. C’erano giocatori nuovi, una nuova squadra, nuove situazioni. Serve tempo perché le cose si compattino. Abbiamo reagito bene e tutto è andato a posto.
SN: Quali sono stati i fattori chiave di quella reazione?
MM: Tutti. A partire dalla dirigenza, lo staff, i giocatori e tutti quelli che lavorano nel club.
SN: Anche tu hai reagito bene. Dopo un inizio pieno di dubbi e infortuni, hai dimostrato a tutti di essere un leader carismatico.
MM: Voglio davvero ringraziare tutti i tifosi perché il loro sostegno è stato davvero motivante per noi e per farci combattere come sappiamo. Quando sto bene e mi sento pronto alle sfide non ho problemi motivazionali. Quando sono infortunato mi sento limitato, nervoso e indifeso…non ho mai dubitato di me stesso ma quando gli altri invece dubitano di me questo mi motiva ancora di più. Lo scorso autunno ho vissuto la parte peggiore della mia carriera. Il problema al gomito è stato davvero doloroso e complicato. Mi ha infastidito molto.
SN: Hai giocato in Bundesliga e nella Liga, riesci a paragonarle alla Serie A?
MM: La Serie A è un campionato davvero difficile, soprattutto per gli attaccanti. Non ci sono molti spazi come negli altri due campionati in cui ho giocato. Il calcio italiano si basa tutto sulla tattica. Nella Juventus lavoriamo davvero bene, siamo forti e compatti. E soprattutto abbiamo dei tifosi fantastici. Ovunque giochiamo ci sentiamo sempre sostenuti da loro. È davvero fantastico.
SN: Hai dei rimpianti per la Champions League?
MM: Non bisogna mai guardarsi indietro e pensare a quello che sarebbe o non sarebbe potuto succedere. Nessuno può cambiare le cose. Siamo un grande club e con pochi innesti possiamo competere con i migliori. La Juve l’ha dimostrato in questi due anni.
SN: Chi rimarrà alla Juventus? Tutti vogliono Pogba.
MM: Io e Pogba parliamo molto. Gli ho detto di restare alla Juve per almeno altri due anni. È giovane, ha molto potenziale. Non ho mai visto un centrocampista del genere…
SN: Ed è anche uomo assist. Te ne ha fatti tanti nelle ultime partite…
MM: È vero. Andiamo molto d’accordo. Ora ci conosciamo meglio e sappiamo come l’altro reagirà durante l’azione. Ora è molto più semplice giocare. E Pogba è un ragazzo fantastico. Tutti parlano di lui ma è un ragazzo davvero semplice.
SN: Cosa succederebbe se Morata andasse via e arrivasse Cavani? La stampa dice che ti cercheresti un’altra squadra.
MM: Dovreste sapere come funziona con i giornalisti. Devono scrivere per forza qualcosa e va bene così. La verità è che sono sicuro al 100% di restare alla Juve. Non c’è motivo per cui io debba andare via. Sono felice qui e la prossima stagione andrà ancora meglio.
SN: La stampa ha anche scritto che non ti è andato giù non essere schierato titolare contro il Bayern.
MM: Beh, come ho già detto, devono pur parlare di qualcosa. Sappiamo tutti qual è la verità. Ero contrariato perché non sono partito dall’inizio ma è la mia reazione abituale. Io sono fatto così, è il mio carattere. Cosa sarei senza la mia indole? Ho un ottimo rapporto con mister Allegri ed è una delle ragioni per cui sto così bene alla Juve. Abbiamo sempre avuto un rapporto professionale ma un mese fa è scattato qualcosa. In questa stagione ne abbiamo passate tante e ora ci conosciamo molto meglio. Rispetto molto Allegri. Dopotutto, i suoi risultati parlano per lui.
SN: Mi sembra che tu ti stia mantenendo in linea con le statistiche.
MM: Ho vinto il campionato con la Dinamo, il Bayern, la Juventus e ho vinto un trofeo con l’Atletico. Le mie statistiche personali non sono importanti, sono quelle della squadra a contare davvero. Non mi interessa quanti gol faccia. Voglio che sia la squadra a vincere, sempre.
SN: Cos’è successo tra te e Simeone?
MM: La stampa ha scritto molte cose riguardo il mio anno all’Atletico. Simeone era un combattente da giocatore ed è ancora così da allenatore. Abbiamo avuto un rapporto pacifico e corretto. Mi piace molto. Ci sono troppe questioni intorno a lui. Ha un modo unico di combattere per la sua squadra, i suoi giocatori e il club. Motiva chiunque gli stia intorno ed è molto convincente. Lo apprezzo davvero tanto. Vorrei che l’Atletico vincesse la Champions. Ho vissuto un anno molto intenso a Madrid e so cosa significa per loro. Se la meritano.

SN: On May 21st, you will play in Coppa Italia final against Milan. It is a big opportunity for Mario Mandzukic to win 18th trophy in his career.
MM: It’s only one game where every team has a chance. Milan is a great club and I am sure that we will have to fight hard for the 3rd trophy of the season.
SN: You look very relaxed. What are your impressions after winning Scudetto?
MM: The feeling is great. But the real celebration is still ahead of us. It’s not the end of the season, we have to remain focused and professional.
SN: Juventus is a world class organized club, isn’t it?
MM: Definitely. I knew that it is a great club, with fantastic tradition, but untill you become a part of the club you can’t imagine how well the club is organized. I was a part of great european clubs, but I was under impression when I came to Juventus.
SN: You broke your nose for the second time in one year. Does it still hurt?
MM: It’s ok, it doesn’t hurt anymore. I took the mask off after the first game, it incommoded me…
SN: What was the doctors reaction after you did that?
MM: The doctors are always very carefull but I don’t listen to them all the time. If I feel good and I am eager to play, I don’t need rest. I had many problems this year. More than ever before. Maybe that was a reason why I started to pay more attention on what the doctors say.
SN: But, still you are a phenomenon. You didn’t have any serious injury. How do you explain it?
MM: It’ probably a mix of genetics and my spartan way of living. During season my life looks like this: house-training-stadium-house.
SN: So you spend your free time in your house, doing what?
MM: I love the peace and quiet of my home. My girlfriend Ivana and I spend time with our dog Leni. I like good rest, so the first day after the match I spend lying and resting.For me that is a perfect way of recovering energy, since I am not very keen on massages.
SN: You are not playing against Verona, and after the last Serie A match of the season you have a Coppa Italia match…
MM: I am not playing against Verona because of my fifth yellow card. It is the first time this season that I am suspended due to the yellow cards. And some people say that I am a rough guy… (ha ha ha) And the game against Milan is on my 30th birthday, so I expect a lot of comments like: “oh, he is so old”, “he is finished” etc. (ha ha ha)
SN: You have been loughing more than ever! You are evidently in a good mood.
MM: Actually I am feeling fantastic. After I had so many injuries during last year now I feel really good. I am happy.
SN: But I didn’t look that way last fall…
MM: Season begun terribly, for Juve and me, and it ends fantasticly. The most important thing is that our fans are happy. The start was really depressing. But it probably had to be that way. New players, new team and new situations. It takes time for the things to come together. We reacted the right way and it all came back in a right way.
SN: What were the key factors of that reaction?
MM: Everyone. Starting from the club leaders, coaches, players and everyone that works in the club.
SN: You had a good reaction too. After the begining full of doubts and injuries, you showed everyone your gladiator character.
MM: I really want to thank all Juve fans because their support was the biggest motive to react and to fight as hard as I can. When I am healthy and ready for challenges I don’t have self confidence issues. When I am injured, I am limited and than I feel really nervous and helpless… I have never doubted myself but I am extremly motivated when other people doubt me. Last fall was the worst part of my career. You can’t belive how painfull and complicated that elbow problem was. It bothered me so much.
SN: You played in Bundesliga and Primera, can you compare it with Serie A?
MM: Serie A is realy difficult league, especially for the forwards. You don’t have so much space and liberty like in those two leagues. Italian football is all about tactics. We are working really good in Juventus, we are stong, well trained and compact. And above that we have excellent supporters. Anywhere we play we feel strong support from our fans. It’s really fascinating.
SN: Do you have any regrets regarding CL?
MM: You should never look back and think what could happen and what couldn’t happen. Nothing can be change that way. We have a top team and with few reinforcements we can compete with the best. Juve showed that during this last two years.
SN: Who will stay at Juventus? Everyone wants Pogba.
MM: Pogba and I talk a lot. I told him to stay at Juve for at least two more years. He is young, he has so much potential. I have never seen such a middfielder in my life…
SN: And an assistman too. He assisted you in last couple of games…
MM: It’s true. We get along very well. Now, we all know each other better and we know how someone will react during the action. It’s so much easier to play now. And Pogba is such a great guy. Everyone is talking about him but he is so cool and simple.
SN: What will happen if Morata leaves and Cavani comes? The press are saying that you will search for a new club.
MM: You of all people should know how the press work. They have to write about something and it’s ok. The truth is that I am 100% sure that I am staying at Juve. I don’t have any reason or intension to leave. I am happy here and I will be even better next season.
SN: The press were also writing about your anger for not being in starting XI against Bayern.
MM: Well, as I said, the press have to write about something. We know what is the truth and what isn’t. I was disappointed because I didn’t start, but I am always like that. It’s the way I am, It’s my character. Who would I be without my character? I have an excellent rapport with coach Allegri and he is one of the reasons why I feel so good here at Juve. We had a professional rapport from the start but it all “clicked” a month ago. We all went through a lot this season and and now we know each other better. I respect Allegri a lot. After all, his results speak for him.
SN: As we can read you are keeping up with your statistics.
MM: I was a champion with Dinamo, Bayern, Juventus and I won a trophy with Atletico. My personal stactistics are not important, it’s the clubs’ statistics that matter. I don’t care how many goals I will score. I want my club to win, every time.
SN: What was the story about you and Simeone?
MM: The press was writing a lot of things about my year at Atletico. Simeone was a fighter when he was a player and he is like that as a coach. We had a very fair and correct rapport. I like him a lot. There is a lot of dramma around him. He has his own way of fighting for his team, players and the club. He motivates everyone around him and he is pretty convincing. I appreciate him a lot. I would like Atletico to win CL. I had an intense year at Madrid and I know how much it means to them. They deserve it.
